Improv Quilt Progress

The quilt top is together (albeit not pressed yet.....lol) and ready for borders.

I decided to use 1" finished sashing between the blocks so that the blocks would float in the final quilt layout.

Next up adding borders -
Border 1 will be a 1" finished WOW border to match the sashing.

Border 2 will be about 6" finished in with and will made of improv pieced sections that are goinf to be made from some orphan lime green strips sets.  I'll be adding orange and yellow to them.  These improv sections will be set with more WOW to finish them.

Gratitudes:

1. Dallas Quilt Show is this weekend, should be fun time.....now to make sure I charge my camera battery.  =)

2. Weather is warming up for the weekend before it turns cold again next week.

Weekend progress

First pair of denim overalls have been cut up into Christmas stocking fronts for the commission I'm working on, the scraps pieced into pieces big enough to get more fronts out of, and combined with stocking fronts from a grey t-shirt for yet more fronts.

These 7 stockings have been completed - top left is pieced from the larger scraps of the denim overalls, the others have a base front from a t-shirt, and then have either pockets, the top section of the front bib or scraps appliqued onto the knit.

Made this quilted postcard for a commission.  Flowers were an orphan block someone had given to me.
These 4 quilted postcards were made with orphan string-pieced bits of fabric.  The sun bonnet sue girls were reclaimed from a tissue box cover that I found several yrs ago in a thrift store.

And I've started pondering how to finish off my improv blocks.  I've rearranged them since taking this pic, but it at least shows them all together.

Gratitudes:

1. For finding the fabric needed to continue working on the commission.

2. Spring is coming and I've got a mower thanks to a friend.......I need it now!    lol

Improv Challenge, Blocks 1-3

I've done string piecing for a long time as a means to using up the tiny and/or narrow pieces in my scrap stash.   However, I hadn't done any real improv piecing until seeing this challenge as my friend Susan was making her blocks.

For this, I started off with a couple of scraps that are my "focus" fabrics - by different designers but very similar in theme/pattern and in colors used in them.   I've then started using fabrics that go with these so that I can put the final blocks together into a finished quilt.
Block 1 was to use strip sets.

I first pulled a few pieces that would work with the prints, and then used part of a leftover piece of "string fabric" in the block as well.   All fabrics are scraps.  14 different fabrics in this block.
Block 2 was to use "chunks" of fabric.

Starting to pull more colors from the focus fabrics in this one.  24 different fabrics from my scraps in this one.
Block 3 was to be an improv log cabin.   I ended up with a cross of a log cabin and court house steps block - never did like to follow the instructions...lol.  There are about 15 different scrap fabrics in this block.  See the parrot in the center peeking out?

Gratitudes:
1. Check is in the mail to payoff the next bill.  So happy to get to color in another flower.

2. No snow or ice down here, but nice 60's and 70's temps.
