Scrap-Happy November 2020

Not a huge month for working with scraps because of other commitments, but I did get a little done.

First up was getting this UFO quilt top finished up.    The blocks had been made with the leftover scraps from cutting up fabrics for charm squares representing all letters of the alphabet.

The WOW sashing and cornerstones were out of the multitudes of scraps that I have.   And I used up some of the binding scraps that I've managed to collect for the scrappy binding.

This purse started with the trimmings and scraps from a T-shirt quilt that I just finished up a couple of weeks ago.   Colors that had been requested were black/grey.      To go with the scraps, I pulled a remnant of a duck cloth type upholstery in grey and cream.   And a chevron print cotton for the lining.

Morning project

My before work sewing this at this point is working on the next purse that I'm making to sell.  I'm currently in the process of quilting the fabric piece for the outside of what will be another cross-body purse.


The outer 'fabric' is pieced from silk strings that I had left over after cutting silk drapery samples up for swatch sets years ago.   The strings range in size from 1" to about 1.5" after stitching.

I'm using this oriental print for the lining of the purse body.   And am quilting it from the back so that I can follow the pattern and give extra dimension to the front.   Two more rows to quilt on it and the quilting will be finished on the outer body.

I'm also working on a pocket for the inside of the purse.  I still need to pull lining fabric for it and then do some minor quilting on it to hold the layers together. 

The binding around the edges at the top of the purse and flap, and the strap will be from a linen/rayon upholstery fabric that has a metallic gold print on it. 

I have more silk scraps and swatches that I'm planning to use to piece more purses with.   And because I'm really liking how the quilting is turning out on this one, I'm planning to go through my stash to look for lining fabrics that I can use in a similar manner to this.   And will have to think about it as well for even quilting regular quilts.....and yes I know I wouldn't be the first to do so, but this is the first that I've done it!

1. For money in savings when payday will come some day but is running a week+ late and bills are due.

Scrap Happy - Completed purse

Finished the little cross-body purse last night.   This one went together much easier than the first one did because I remembered to not do things the hard way....lol

Most of the fabrics in this were batik strings that I had accumulated through buying scrap bags in various quilt stores.   The 3 or 4 that are about 2" in size were cut off of larger scrap pieces.   The lining was a large scrap piece that came home in a scrap bag at some point.  The binding around the edges was also out of scraps.   And the batting that the strips were pieced to was also a scrap piece leftover from a long ago project. 

The purple webbing was the only thing bought new and that was 3 or so years ago.   The button was bought last year at Joann's when they redid their button layout and had a lot of them on clearance for $0.25. 

Finished size of the purse is 7.5" wide by 9" tall. 

This year there is a 2020 challenge being hosted by Sharon Boggan to use 2020 different items in their stitching by the end of 2020.   And while I'm not taking part in the challenge per se because I'm not working on only CQ, I am adapting it to fit what I'm doing these days.  So I will be keeping track of how many different fabrics, buttons and other items I use in my quilting over the next couple of year.

In this little bag my totals are 17 different fabrics, 1 button and the purple webbing for a total of 19 different items in the purse not counting the batting used to give it body.

Woohoo...I've managed to finish the top and back for the T-shirt quilt. Only thing left to do is to figure out how I need to adjust the back so that there is enough room too put it onto the frame by the gal who is going to quilt it for me.

And the latest project that I finished today is a purse for me. Both of the two that i've been using are coming apart, so I needed to get a new one. But I haven't been able to find one that I liked, so I decided to make one for myself. =) Pictures of the purse are below. The purse Front has a pocket made from a quilted piece from the stash of a quilting friend who passed away last year. Used another piece from her as an inside pocket as well. The main body of the purse is denim and I used a remnant to line it. The only thing I don't like is that the fusible fleece didn't want to bond to the denim when I tried ironing it on today. The purse was made in a similar manner to how I make tote bags and was easy to make. =)
