It's a Picnic Blog Hop My Day- July 19th

This month's project used fabrics that I'd bought both as a scrap bag and as  the last remnant of fabric on clearance at my local quilt store.

Cozies were made with fabrics I thought appropriate for picnics.   Now lest you think cozies are only good for hot stuff.....not so!   Here in Phoenix, when it is pushing close to 120 degrees, this is the time of the year to use cozies to help keep your bowls of ice cream cold longer while you eat it....well, unless you really enjoy drinking melted ice cream.  ;-)

First up was this set made with beer themed fabric.   One side was pieced with scraps of 2 different fabrics from a scrap bag bought about a year ago.  The second side was made from a remnant that was bought later. While I don't drink beer, I know lots of people do.  

The second set of cozies were made from a panel that was bought as a remnant in the clearance section of my local quilt store.   The panel was comprised of 8 10 inch squares, so is perfect for cozies. I bought the remnant which was 2 panels, so still have 12 more squares to use for something else.   And I thought the picnic theme was perfect for this blog hop.    The cozies were backed a red Kona that was bought as a remnant.

I'm hoping to sell the cozies at some point.

ScrapHappy July 2023

 Almost forgot to post this month with all that has been going on this past week.   The memorial service for my dad was this morning so once again I can think.

Lots of scrappy piecing this month with scraps I'd received from a friends mom's stuff.   First up were 30+ of these 6" by 10" finished string pieced blocks.   I'm still debating about how to set them into a quilt.

Next up were these 15 patch blocks in the same size.   I've got a vision in mind for these, but am trying to use remnants for setting blocks....and not set on fabrics yet.   May need to make more of the pieced blocks, won't know till I decide on a layout.

Until next month, stay cool in the heat of summer.

When Pigs Fly Blog Hop - My Day, June 22nd

Welcome to the last day of the When Pigs Fly blog hop.   

I have two UFO's in process at this time. 

The first one an antique quilt made by my maternal great-grandmother.  It was made about 80-85 years ago.   Made from muslins and feedsacks, some of the fabrics had not worn well and repairs were needed.     

I started repair work on this back in the fall of 2022.  Once done it will be given to a cousin who saw her mom help quilt our great-grandmother quilt it.

An example of the repairs needed......There were 3 cornerstones that needed to be replaced, and 6 of the sashing sections.   Fabric is delicate so I'm just appliqueing the replacement on top and then quilting to look similar to the original.   Original cornerstone fabric was a light green, closest I could find was a pale blue that comes close to the faded color.   Batting was made from local grown Texas cotton and there is no scrim in it.  All of which makes it difficult to hand quilt through at times.

There were 5 of the Sun Bonnet Sue quilt that needed repairs - 5 bonnets and 3 dresses were replaced.   Hand sewn down and black floss used for the matching embroidery.

Also in the works is this quilt, I've now got the quilting finished on it.  Binding will be up soon for it.   I found the quilt top in a local second hand store and bought for just a bit over $2.  It was in good shape, so I couldn't see leaving it there on the rack.   Will finish it up and donate it.    It it about the length of a twin, but only 42 or so inches wide.   Should make a nice boys quilt.

ScrapHappy - June 2023

 This past month has been a stressful month to say the least.  My father passed away unexpectedly the middle of May and life has been topsy-turvy since as I've handled what needed to be done.   

With all the craziness there were times when I needed something mindless, thank goodness for having block sections already cut and ready to piece.   First up were these prairie point blocks.   These with the ones I already had made now give me 63 which is enough to make a lap quilt.

Next up was using up a several remnants and scraps to make this quilt top.   It will eventually be donated.

Then came these anvil blocks.   Made from pieces that had been cut some years ago by my best quilt buddy.  She remembers she and I were going to make matching quilts.   Haven't a clue where mine went.   More blocks yet to be made with the rest of what she sent.  

And finally two remnants were cut to start a picnic themed project for a July blog hop.
