I've been working on getting a bunch of teddy bears made from shirts that had belonged to the father-in-law of my adopted niece. And of course there is material and pieces left over from the shirts that are used in the bears. The shirt plackets are one of the sections that didn't work in the bear.
I wanted to make something for his widow, so I decided to make a pillow using the plackets to give to my niece (or her MIL). First layout was with space between the plackets to see how that looked.
The second layout, and the one I ended up keeping, had the plackets right next to each other. The plackets are pinned down as I weave them so that they don't shift.
Once all pinned, then I straight stitch along each side of the plackets to hold them in place on the finished pillow.
Final layout of the pillow with one of shirt pockets added in the upper corner added for a bit of pizzazz.
I've also made a pincushion using the same technique using the plackets from just a single shirt. This will end up as a gift for some quilting friend at some point.
Check out what the rest of the hoppers are making to give today.

I do love the pillow, and the pincushion is just so cute, too! You know how to use every single bit of anything! Thanks for sharing.
I always think that this is such a wonderful idea when someone has passed and I am sure the lady will love having something like this to remember her dear husband. Hugs, Susie xx
A clever idea to use the left over fabric.
What a thoughtful gift. I am sure it will be so appreciated.
Thanks for sharing that fun technique. Your pillow is wonderful!
Thats a great way to use those plackets! I really like that design. Great job!

I love the pillow and that pincushion is just the cutest! Either one would be a treasured gift. Thanks for sharing!
That’s such a clever idea. You’ve made me feel guilty about throwing those bits out! ;-)
Adorable pillow. I would have never gotten the rows straight. Very unique too.
The widow will definitely love the pillow...it will be just like resting her head on her hubby's chest!! What a clever idea!!! And the pin cushion...wow it is amazing and your quilting buddy will love it!!
That's a fabulous idea for the pillow and the pin cushion. Very clever and meaningful, too! Thank you for sharing!! :)
Excellent gift idea! Thanks for sharing!
I quickly scrolled through your post. The outcome? My jaw hit the floor upon seeing the project reveal. Seriously A-Mazing!!!
Wonderful use of the shirt strips and pocket to make a pillow. Thanks for sharing in the hop ... :) Pat
What a thoughtful gift. I am sure she will apreciate it.
OHMYGOSH! That pillow is so cute.
Love it! Wish I had seen this idea earlier. I saved all my dads shirts after he passed. I cut them into pieces that could be used for quilts but, tossed out the plackets and cuffs thinking there wasn't a use for them. Thanks for sharing!
Love, love, love you clever girl!!!!
Love how you've incorporated the leftovers of the shirts. Really, I liked both of the two layouts of the plackets. I can see the first layout used just as a table topper. And...the pincushion is perfect - I have a thing about pincushions!!
Pillows and pincushions....what a sweet idea for memory pieces to make/quilt. Thank you for sharing these gift ideas.
Very creative way to use the shirt plackets. These will make great gifts.
The pillow is so creative. Thanks for showing what you made.
Love how you used the placket of the shirt! Awesome idea.
Great idea especially for an adopted child from her adopted grandfather, if I kept the story straight. She will treasure this. I love the weaving technique and the fact that you used all parts of the shirt. I deconstruct my husband's shits if they are majority cotton. I wonder what to do with cuffs, collars And those thick seams. I want to use ALL of it. You have helped me today. Thanks!
What a wonderful idea to use plackets from shirts! I loved the weaving and the pocket on the pillow. I'm sure your recipient will love it. The little pin cushion is cute too. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas! It is a blessing, indeed, to share our gift with others.
Love your pillow! Very creative!
I love this idea! The woven aspect is really neat and that pillow turned out great. Thank you for sharing!
